There were more stages for bands to play on, more releases by independent labels and a variety of bands playing in different styles. The 80s were also a time when women's rights in Japan, though a topic of conversation, were not widely visible in the real world. There were very few women in the underground music scene at the time, but none of them dressed like punks or dyed their hair, or outwardly showed much interest in declaring independence from the usual rules. So, in 1981, when Hikko, Mika, and Emiko (aka Chasen-maru) first appeared together as OXZ, they were intentionally shocking. Nothing happens in a vacuum, however. It was already acceptable for young women to form bands in the safety of their high school music clubs. They generally played cover songs at school events. However, actually stepping out into the dirty world of live houses was for the adventurous and compelled. To do so in OXZ's overtly provocative, dramatic way was unheard of. Contemporaries of Shonen Knife, OXZ were known for the intensity of their live performances. Releasing their first EP in 1984 - an 8\" EP - their catalog belies their reputation for moody, dark post-punk ahead of it's time. The bass and drums dominate; the guitars are angular and spiky - punk, but with something extra. Along Ago: 1981-1989 collects the band's entire catalog - three EPs and a single - alongside unearthed, unreleased demos. Then, 1989, it ended as the band went their separate ways. And the name? Focusing on the aesthetics of cult ritual and the devastating power of music, Deb sought an alternative way to share the cosmic agenda. Wielding a left-handed guitar, Deb employs a unique style of arpeggiated finger picking, producing vast and organic musical textures reminiscent of Vinny Reilly (DURUTTI COLUMN) with the anthemic power of SISTERS OF MERCY and COCTEAU TWINS. In the past two years Deb has been invited to support bands such as COLD CAVE, PSYCHIC TV, CLAN OF XYMOX, The FROZEN AUTUMN, PRAYERS, and label mates YOUTH CODE and KING DUDE. From its incarnation, DRAB MAJESTY was a solo act; an interplay between guitar and triggered machines. In 2016, with growing audiences and heightened interest, DRAB expanded into a duo, employing the keyboard accompaniment of far-out twin, MONA D—filling out frequencies and upping the spectacle of the live performance. The environment brought much excitement and possibility, but the distance had proved too much for the car he brought along. With it out of commission indefinitely, he purchased a bus pass and planned his daily commute from his Echo Park apartment to his downtown studio, where he began to shape Bigger Than Life. The route wound all through the city, from the small local shops of Echo Park to the rising glass of the business district, to the desperation of Skid Row. The hurried energy of the environment provided a backdrop for the daily trip. When Stewart finally arrived at his studio, he'd look through his window at the mountains and the sky, seeing the beauty that makes L.A. unique - the same beauty his fellow commuters, some pushed to the edge of human endurance, had seen. That was the headspace he was in when he began to map out the syncopated drums and staccato arpeggiation of Bigger Than Life, an ode to his new condition and a shimmering synth-pop response to it's cacophony. \"The album comes out of seeing and experiencing a lot of turmoil but wanting to create something positive out of it,\" Stewart explains. \"I wanted to take a less selfish approach on this record. Maybe I'm just getting older, but that approach starts to feel a little self-indulgent. So with this record, it's less about how I see things and more about the way things just are. Seeing myself as a part of a lineage of people trying to do a little something instead of trying to create a platform for myself individually.\" As with every Black Marble album, Stewart recorded, produced, and played everything you hear on Bigger Than Life using entirely analog gear, though the process was new. Continuing in a similar vein is Psychopatha in which Vega takes on a sinister bogeyman persona scaring off children and their mothers alike with invitations to \"take your kids to Deadland\". Like much of this album - and indeed much of Vega's career - the track is haunted by images of war. Not For Sale: Live' 78\/79 is a collection of live and rehearsal tracks that captures the band making the same noises as on those 45s, and presents live versions of the fan faves and vastly superior versions of most of the LP tracks as well as coughing up a bunch of hitherto unreleased originals and covers to boot. This is \"The Legendary Scientists\"-as they were dubbing themselves within months of forming-as they should be heard.\u003c\/p\u003e\nThe main set comes from late 1979: a live-to-air broadcast from Melbourne's 3RRR. The same line-up is also present on a handful of primitive live recordings, made by a friend at one of the group's regular haunts, the Governor Broome Hotel in '79. Play this really loud and it sounds like right there in the pub, shitty PA and all. Packaged with rare and unseen images, an original 1979 Roadrunner magazine feature by Kim Williams (of the Summer Suns, and co-writer of Swampland) and additional notes by Grown Up Wrong's Dave Laing.
