"Gold Past Life" acts as the end of an unintentional thematic trilogy of records that began with 2014’s EDJ (a solo record by name, but a Fruit Bats release in spirit) and hit an emotional peak with 2016’s Absolute Loser. They encompass years of loss, displacement, and the persistent, low-level anxiety of the current political climate. They were written in the wake of friends who left these earthly confines and families that could have been. Johnson reflects on the strange, often beautiful & sometimes uncomfortable passage of time whilst channeling the classic pastoral sounds of All Things Must Pass, early (pre- disco) psychedelic pop-era Bee Gees & the unbelievable late 60s/early 70s runs of Ray Davies & Harry Nilsson.

A range of guests contribute to the album including guitar wiz & much buzzed songwriter Meg Duffy (Hand Habits), Greta Morgan (Vampire Weekend), Neal Casal (Circles Around the Sun), and more. The album also sees Fruit Bats’ working relationship with producer and engineer Thom Monahan (Neko Case, Devendra Banhart) hit its stride. Three breezy singles have been released thus far, most recently the premiere of “Ocean” via Paste Magazine. Preceding that were singles for title track “Gold Past Life” & “The Bottom of It” (which has received rotation on BBC6 6Music).

Fruit Bats hits the road this summer for a tour that includes stops at Johnson’s curated Huichica Fest in California and our birthday party festival, MRG30, in North Carolina.
