The Replacements built an entire career out of rebelling, reacting and kicking against the pricks. And they never kicked harder than on their 1983 album Hootenanny — a stylistic free-for-all that would mark the band’s true artistic departure point. Crucially, though, it would be Hootenanny that freed the band from its early punk trappings and set them loose. Even though they’d assimilated a variety of genres on the record, Westerberg would note proudly that Hootenanny was “the first album that sounds just like us. The first one, I think, that is our style.”
