They Can't All Be Zingers is slightly weighted toward the band's early days. The first half of the album culls nine tracks from the band's first three studio efforts, and shows PRIMUS at its focused best. Led by singer/bassist LED CLAYPOOL's slap-happy bass and balls-out weird songwriting, the band split the difference between alt-metal and alternative rock, but check guitarist LARRY LALONDE's marvelously restrained shredding in tracks like "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver" and "Tommy the Cat" that supports CLAYPOOL's finger-popped strangeness. A string of singles essential to the act's era ("Too Many Puppies," "Jerry" and "My Name is Mud") support a cast of hard-hitting cuts that are essential listening for anyone ready to remember the '90s.
