Soft Coup- The C-Word

Label: Soft Coup

Released 9/25/2026

Local Release! Soft Coup classifies themselves as Jazz-Pop and draws inspiration from musicians such as Erykah Badu, Hiatus Kayiote, Khruangbin, Crumb, Mac Ayres, Amy Winehouse, Sade, HER, Solange, Homeshake, and many others. Hannah (vocals, guitar), Eric (drums), Lake (bass), Allison (trumpet, keys), and Alex (guitar) all hail from Bloomington Illinois and have been playing in bands within the area for more than a decade. They pride themselves in offering something unique apart from the emo/punk/rock genres—primarily dominated by young, cis-het males—that saturate the area. Hannah’s lyrics are cheeky and candid, with song titles such as “Dick Magick,” “Hard Bitch,” “Interstitial Gristle.” She balances topics such as subversion, sexual assault, generational trauma, systemic racism, and the gender spectrum with curiosity, reverance, and satire.
